Niki de Saint Phalle 1930° - 2002†

Niki de Saint Phalle was born into a family of Catholic bankers to a French father and an American mother. When she was three, the family moved to New York, America. She spent her childhood there and was traumatized at the age of eleven as a result of sexual abuse by her father. She then incorporated this experience into her surreal film Daddy and other works of art. She was placed in a monastery by her parents. After leaving the convent, she became a model and married American writer Harry Mathews at the age of 19. They had two children. She later left the family. In 1951, she returned to Paris and in 1952 she began to paint. As an artist, she was self-taught.
