Zhang Xiaogang 1958°

Zhang Xiaogang (Kunming, 1958) is a Chinese artist known for his monochromatic portraits of Chinese people. He based his work on family portraits from the time of the Cultural Revolution. The painting Bloodline Series: Comrade No 120 was auctioned in New York in March 2006 for $979,200. Xiaogang thus set a record for a contemporary Chinese artist. In the run on Chinese art that has since arisen, work by himself and other Chinese artists has surpassed that figure many times over. Zhang Xiaogang saw his work flip 6,000 times in March 2008, from $1,000 to $6m
